Hi, do you know me?
I'm Posidonia!

Dive with us to discover the world of Posidonia

My name is Posidonia oceanica. I live underwater in the shallow, clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
Have you ever met me? I am green and my leaves move with the rhythm of the waves and currents.
Perhaps we’ve already met during your summer swims or a walk along the seashore.

Let’s get to know each other better!

Did you know that

Posidonia sustains a rich and healthy ecosystem

Seagrass meadows rank among the most valuable coastal ecosystems on Earth in terms of the ecosystem services they provide. Posidonia generates oxygen through photosynthesis, helping to make a thriving environment possible. As a habitat, Posidonia meadows are biodiversity hotspots, providing food, a safe nursery, and breeding ground for hundreds of species.

Posidonia protects the coastline

Seagrass leaves absorb nutrients and slow the flow of water, capturing sand, dirt and silt particles. Their roots trap and stabilize the sediment. These processes help improve water clarity and quality, and reduce coastal erosion, as well as functioning as a buffer against storms.

Posidonia mitigates the effects of climate change

Posidonia meadows, like other seagrass meadows, are considered Blue Carbon ecosystems due to their capacity to store and fix carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. LIke terrestrial plants, Posidonia absorbs carbon from the surrounding environment to grow its leaves and roots. When parts of the plants and associated organisms die and decay, they are buried under the seafloor and trapped in the sediment for centuries.
