Tremiti Islands 2024

Posidonia: why is it important to protect it?

Community engagement is at the heart of Save the Wave. To ensure lasting impact, one of the project’s standout initiatives is hosting events that inspire people to protect the marine environment.

In 2024, during the Summer School on Ocean Literacy and Ecosystem Restoration, UNESCO-IOC, the University of Bari and E.ON organized a community event to share the results of Save the Wave activities in the area, and raise awareness among the community and tourists about the importance of adopting responsible behaviors to preserve Posidonia meadows.

The event was also an occasion to discuss the Summer School activities, and showcase the value of careers in marine sciences to improve human knowledge of the sea. The event concluded with a screening of The Hidden Treasure of the Tremiti Islands, a National Geographic documentary that showcases the discovery of black coral forests in the waters around the islands.
