Protecting the ocean from pollution means protecting the future of the planet. With the E.ON Energy4Blue initiative, E.ON was the first partner to join the Save the Wave project in 2021, contributing to efforts to restore Posidonia oceanica meadows in the Gulf of Mondello and the Tremiti Islands in Italy.

TIMELINE
2024
Restoration in Tremiti Islands
In 2024, E.ON supported the monitoring and reinforcement of restored areas around the Tremiti Islands and Mondello. In the Tremiti Islands, a new restoration site was developed with the University of Bari Aldo Moro and contributions from Save the Wave summer school participants.
Save the Wave Summer School on Ocean Literacy and Ecosystem Restoration.
The second edition of the Save the Wave Summer School took place from June 24-28 on the Tremiti Islands, as part of a collaboration among UNESCO-IOC, E.ON, and the University of Bari. The 2024 Summer School welcomed fourteen university students and early-career ocean professionals from international institutions, including the University of Barcelona, the University of Genoa, and the IMBRSea program. The program aimed to help participants develop practical skills for their future careers. There were lectures and practical activities focused on restoration methodologies and monitoring techniques to assess the health of local habitats and biodiversity. At the end of the training, a public event was held to raise awareness about preserving local marine ecosystems, attracting the interest of over 100 residents and tourists.
Restoration in Tremiti Islands
Save the Wave at school In spring 2024, E.ON supported the delivery of an educational programme which engaged 538 students from the Puglia region. The students participated in outdoor education activities to explore local biodiversity and ecosystems, highlighting the vital role of Posidonia oceanica meadows in protecting the coastline and the ecosystem. Participating schools included Scientific High School Statale C. Cafiero from Barletta, Middle School Statale Amedeo D'Aosta from Bari, Primary School and Kindergarten Mons. Petronelli from Trani, and Istituto Comprensivo M. D'Azeglio - G. de Nittis from Barletta.
Summer School in the Gulf of Palermo and Mondello Water Festival 2024.
In spring 2024, E.ON supported the organization of Save the Wave ocean literacy activities at the Mondello Water Festival, engaging more than 6000 people. Over 300 students were involved in activities organized as part of the Summer School organized in Mondello to create connections among youth and the marine environment. Through this experience, students learned about the importance of acting for the preservation of marine ecosystems.
2023
Restoration in Tremiti Islands
In June 2023, E.On supported the organization of the first edition of the summer school, coordinated by the University of Bari in collaboration with UNESCO-IOC, that took place in Tremiti Islands. The summer school engaged 15 university students in lectures and outdoor activities to monitor and assess the health of marine ecosystems. As part of this Summer School, actions were taken to strengthen and expand the Posidonia meadow that was established in 2022.
Save the Wave Research
Thanks to the support of E.ON, scientists and researchers from the University of Bari, The Oceancy and UNESCO-IOC were able to develop a toolkit to engage local divers in the monitoring actions over the year. Furthermore, the preliminary restoration results of the Tremiti Islands sites have been presented at the 52nd Congress of the Italian Society of Marine Biology in June and the IEEE MetroSea international conference in October in Malta.
Save the Wave at school
In spring 2023, 167 students from elementary to high schools in the Puglia region took part in activities to raise awareness of Posidonia oceanica and foster a new generation of ocean stewards.
Ocean Days in Palermo
In Mondello, E.ON supported the development of activities that involved 40 students from the Istituto Rapisardi-Garibaldi and the Liceo Scientifico Galileo Galilei in efforts to support the restoration of Posidonia oceanica meadows locally. The event aimed to strengthen connections among the youth and the ocean to foster actions for its preservation. During the Ocean Days the Posidonia restoration site was strengthened and enlarged by 15 square meters.
Ocean&Climate Village Naples
In March 2023, E.ON supported the organization of the Ocean&Climate Village exhibition at Castel dell’Ovo in Naples. This is the first UNESCO-IOC exhibition dedicated to the connection between the ocean and the climate. The exhibition saw the participation of more than 1200 visitors and the engagement of researchers from the Stazione Zoologica Anthon Dohrn, Ismar-CNR, and the University of Naples Federico II.
2022
Restoration in Tremiti Islands
In August 2022, E.ON supported marine biologists from the University of Bari, The Oceancy and UNESCO-IOC in regenerating two 50m2 meadows of Posidonia oceanica in the Tremiti Islands. The action included the training of the divers from the local diving center, Aquodiving, who supported all the phases of the project. Monitoring sessions have since been conducted to assess the success of the initiative.
Restoration in Palermo
In April 2022, in Mondello, a bay in the gulf of Palermo, E.ON supported the implementation of the first pilot project for the restoration of the local Posidonia oceanica meadow. At the site 800 cuttings of Posidonia were replanted, covering an area of about 100m2. These activities involved 20 students from the Galileo Galilei High School, who collected cuttings and seedlings to be replanted by the marine biologists. Monitoring sessions have since been conducted to assess the success of the initiative.
Ocean&Climate Village Venice
In April 2022, E.ON sponsored the Ocean&Climate Village exhibition in the Venice Arsenale. The exhibition welcomed over a thousand visitors and three hundred students, raising awareness of the nexus between ocean and climate and inspiring action to preserve marine ecosystems. The exhibition was made possible thanks to contributions from the Municipality of Venice, Ismar-CNR, the IUAV University of Venice, and the University of Milano-Bicocca.
2021
Ocean&Climate Village Milano Triennale
In October, E.ON sponsored the first Ocean&Climate Village exhibition held at the Milano Triennale, an interactive educational experience to raise awareness of the role that the ocean plays in regulating the climate, and how it connects with our daily lives. During the event, there was a dialogue on the role of the private sector in ocean preservation with the participation of Davide Villa, former Chief Customer Officer and E.ON Board Member, together with Francesca Santoro,UNESCO-IOC Senior Programme Officer, and Marta Monaco, Financial and Corporate Communication Manager at Prada Group.
