Tremiti Islands 2023

Summer School on Marine Bionomy of the Tremiti Islands

As part of Save the Wave, the University of Bari Aldo Moro organized a Summer School on "Marine Bionomy of the Tremiti Islands” in 2023. The training took place from 5 to 9 June on the Tremiti Islands and was attended by 15 students from different universities, such as the Marche Polytechnic University, University of Genoa, University of Salerno and Universidad De León (ULE).

This program equipped students with practical skills for monitoring coastal marine habitats and biodiversity. Through a mix of lectures and hands-on field activities, participants learned how to make informed management decisions for the Tremiti Islands Marine Protected Area (MPA) and learned techniques for restoring key habitats like Posidonia oceanica meadows.

The course's educational objectives included:

  • Developing practical skills in field data collection operations

  • Acquiring the ability to identify key Mediterranean benthic biocenoses, with a focus on Posidonia oceanica meadows

  • Acquiring specialized vocabulary and terminology to allow students to improve their understanding of the studied topics

  • Developing critical skills in assessing the health of marine habitats

  • Gaining the ability to communicate the characteristics and value of Mediterranean habitats

What participants say about their experience:

"Besides being supportive of my future career, it allowed me to grow mentally and open my horizons."

"These activities make us realize whether we have taken the right path, that make us fall in love with what we do, and that give us the chance to learn and grow both academically and humanely more than any lesson!"
