Summer School on Ocean Literacy and Ecosystem Restoration

In 2024, building on the previous Summer School experience, UNESCO-IOC collaborated with the University of Bari Aldo Moro and E.ON to organize the Summer School on Ocean Literacy and Ecosystem Restoration to train students in practical skills on seagrass restoration, studying, and monitoring, and improve their communication skills through ocean literacy.

The Summer School took place from 1 to 5 July 2024 on the Tremiti Islands and was attended by 14 students from universities from France, Italy, United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, and Germany.

The Summer School supported the following educational objectives:

  • To effectively work on conservation, restoration and monitoring of seagrass meadows and other coastal ecosystems

  • To develop effective science communication and storytelling content

  • Acquisition of manual skills in field data collection

  • Training in Posidonia oceanica restoration and replanting techniques

  • Ability to communicate the characteristics and value of Mediterranean habitats
