Summer School on Ocean Literacy and Ecosystem Restoration 2025
In 2025, building on the previous Summer School experience, UNESCO-IOC collaborated with the University of Bari Aldo Moro and E.ON to organize the Summer School on Ocean Literacy and Ecosystem Restoration to train students in practical skills on seagrass restoration, studying, and monitoring, and improve their communication skills through ocean literacy.
The Summer School took place from 22 to 26 September on the Tremiti Islands and was attended by eleven students from universities from Algeria, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and the USA.
The Summer School supported the following educational objectives:
To effectively work on conservation, restoration and monitoring of seagrass meadows and other coastal ecosystems
To develop effective science communication and storytelling content
Acquisition of manual skills in field data collection
Training in Posidonia oceanica restoration and replanting techniques
Ability to communicate the characteristics and value of Mediterranean habitats
