Tremiti Islands 2023
World Oceans Day
Community engagement is at the heart of Save the Wave. To ensure lasting impact, one of the project’s standout initiatives is hosting events that inspire people to protect the marine environment.
On World Oceans Day 2023, held on 8 June, we invited the Summer School participants to take on the role of presenters, sharing insights about the habitats and biodiversity of the Tremiti Islands with locals and tourists. The groups covered key topics, blending scientific information with cultural elements to create a stronger connection between the community and the sea. There were presentations on Posidonia oceanica, its protection and regeneration, coralligenous reefs, underwater caves, and local wildlife.
The event concluded with a screening of The Hidden Treasure of the Tremiti Islands, a National Geographic documentary that showcases the discovery of black coral forests in the waters around the islands.
E.ON Energia has been essential to the success of the Save the Wave project, supporting its growth and long-term sustainability. With E.ON's backing, the project can expand its impact beyond restoration, share findings at conferences, and publish in scientific journals, helping to advance marine conservation globally.
